There are no secrets in roasting nuts in your kitchen. All you need to be conscious of is the timing. This is because you will have to roast nuts in shell longer than those that have already been shelled. Either way, you will be spending less than 30 minutes for the whole preparation, and you will be crunching in no time. All that you need for the roasting process are a shallow baking dish and the nuts. Raw dries nuts are always the best for roasting.

How to Use Oven to Roast Nuts

  • To get started, you need to preheat your oven to about 350 degrees F. Although this is the average temperature for all nuts, some nuts may call for lower or higher temperature. The temperature depends on the type of nut you want to roast and the seasonings you want to use.
  • Get a large bowl and mix your nuts with your desired seasonings. If you will like to add a coating to your nuts, mix it with the nuts first in the bowl. Now, add the dry seasonings like cayenne pepper or sugar; this will make them stick to the coating. On the other hand, you can roast your nuts plain without anything. After plain roasting, you can then add seasonings like salt, brown sugar, and fresh herbs. This means that you can add flavor any time.
  • For plain nuts, bake in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes. During this time, stir at least once until they are roasted.
  • For coated nuts, on the other hand, bake for 15-25 minutes. During this time, stir every 5 minutes until all the nuts turned golden and appear dry.
  • For plain nuts, after roasting, sprinkle on your desired seasonings. Stir thoroughly until they are well mixed. You can add melted butter to your roasted nuts first before adding seasonings to them. This will make them stick easily.
  • After adding seasoning (for plain nuts) or roasting, spread them on a large piece of waxed or foil paper. Allow them to cool totally before storing.

Note – Since all nuts are not of the same size, they are not expected to roast at the same amount of time. For instance, the amount of time for whole nuts to roast will be different from that of chopped or sliced nuts. Also, larger nuts like pecans and walnuts will generally take a longer time to roast than smaller nuts like peanuts.

However, adding certain coatings or seasonings to your nuts could also affect their roasting time. For instance, if you are brushing your nuts with water and a mix of egg whites before roasting, you will need to roast them until they are dry. This will take a longer time, and they will be safe to eat.

Storing and Using Roasted Peanuts

You can store unshelled roasted peanuts for up to a month in an airtight container placed on the shelf. If you decide to store them in the refrigerator, they will keep for six months. However, if you will like to store them in the freezer, you can keep them for up to a year! All these are applicable to all raw unshelled peanuts. Once you know this and you get a great deal, you can stock them up and store them for as long as you like. Apart from roasted peanuts, all roasted nuts can store for up to this long too.
